For fans of Stargate the long wait for the DVD release of Stargate: The Ark of Truth was worth it. 10 years since the TV series ended, fans weren’t disappointed at all with this direct-to-DVD release. The story began with SG-1 attempt to retrieve the Ark of Truth, an Alteran relic created to brainwash all living beings who look into it. The plot faithfully follows the adventures of well-loved characters such as Lieutenant Mitchell, Dr. Daniel Jackson, Teal’c, Vala and Lieutenant Carter.

Special features include a 9-minute mini re-cap called”The Road Taken: Prelude to the Ark of Truth”. Everyone will definitely appreciate being re-enlightened about key happenings in Stargate SG-1’s Season 9 and 10, specifically the Ori arc. Stargate: The Ark of Truth will contain minimal flashback scenes that will only serve to frustrate fans of the movie and series. What’s excellent is that you can opt to play the movie with or without the prelude. How remarkable! Fans who weren’t able to attend the Stargate panel at the 2007 Comic-con will appreciate the 20-minute “Stargate at Comic-con” featurette. Lastly, the 30-minute documentary “Uncovering the Ark of Truth” will surely be enjoyed by those who want to know what goes on behind the making of this monumental film.

Production budget for this film was surprisingly high. $7 million can certainly yield excellent visual effects without compromising the action and humour that made Stargate: SG-1 so popular. Rather than make a mere two-parter episode to complete the SG-1 saga, this film was conceived to delight fans with its epic feel and excellent score.

Stargate is also available in Blu-ray, the most notable being the Stargate Extended Cut Blu-ray edition released in the year 1994. Most HD DVD owners find that this edition boasts greater clarity, brighter colors and dynamic visuals, especially during the vibrant desert scenes. The only downside would be the presence of video noise. Other than that, fans would be pleased with the excellent disc menu. Imagine seeing Egyptian hieroglyphics turn into simple old English before your eyes. How apt! If you owned the VHS and DVD version of this excellent movie, it is only natural that you might want to own the BD version as well. Go ahead, it’s worth the money spent!
