Stargate Games

The highly successful Stargate franchise spawned not a successful television series, Movies, DVDs, animation, tonnes of fan fictions and stories, but games too!

Most notable was the Stargate SG-1: The Alliance computer game that’s slated to be released in 2006. Alas, to the disappointment of many, plans to release this First Person Shooter game were shelved. What would have been an excellent FPS chronicling important event found in the Stargate universe and television series, is now no more.

The plot revolves around happenings in the midst of Season 8. Players will find out more about Anubis and how new nemeses like the Haaken evolve the storyline. Like any typical FPS, players can choose significant characters and complete missions to advance in the game, but that won’t encompass the entire experience! The whole point is to live out the pivotal episodes while solving puzzles from varying levels of difficulty using stealth and cunning. Based on the modified Unreal 2.5 engine, this game would have boasted several fun modes including the ever-essential Death Match as well as Capture the Flag mode. It was also hinted that players can also fly the Prometheus ship! Imagine that!

However, the hopes and dreams of millions of fans were dashed when plans to release this game did not materialise. Seems that there was a legal battle and licensing problems, and while there weren’t official announcements made, postings in the official game forum clearly indicate that plans to create this game has been indefinitely discontinued.

Meanwhile, fans can look forward to Stargate Worlds, an upcoming Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) slated to be released end of 2008. Gameplay will be synchronised with the happenings revolving around both the Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis TV series. Fans wonder if there are cameos of Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Welch, respectively playing the roles of Colonel Jack O’Neill and his younger self. Female fans will remember Michael Welch for that role, and another pivotal one in Joan of Arcadia.

Another favourite spin-off to the Stargate universe is the StarGate Wars browser, turn-based MMORPG. Endless fun and free to boot, it’s not too complex for newbies and still prove to be satisfying for fans alike.

Worth mentioning also are the old Stargate video games by Acclaim Entertainment, makers of classic favourites like old Batman games in the SNES platform (my personal favourites). For collectors and Stargate fans, worth collecting are Stargate trading card games boasting excellent art from Comic Images.

Lastly, if you find that you need good music to accompany you, I must mention that the Stargate Atlantis Dance Mix by DJ Real makes good trance and dance music, perfect for when you play these Stargate games or watching Stargate reruns and episodes in your free time.
